The host can play. Nobody has to act.
This is for the person who has eight people coming in three weeks and does not want to perform. You said yes to hosting. You did not say yes to spending two hours keeping a straight face because you are the only one who knows the answer.
This is for the person who has eight people coming in three weeks and does not want to perform. You said yes to hosting. You did not say yes to spending two hours keeping a straight face because you are the only one who knows the answer.
Murder at Thornwood Manor is a printable murder mystery for 4 to 20 players that runs 105 to 120 minutes, and the host plays it like everybody else. Eight suspects, one of them guilty. Every guest gets a character booklet with every word they will ever say already printed inside, so nobody acts, memorizes or improvises. The answer arrives as a separate sealed PDF with a do-not-open cover page, and the 24 clue cards sort into three numbered packets by the numbers on their backs, so you build the whole kit without reading a single piece of evidence. When a guest asks whether they are close, the honest answer is that the envelope knows and you do not.
The answer is in a file you never open. There is nothing for you to give away because you genuinely do not know, which is the one thing almost no other mystery kit can offer the person who bought it.
Every word is printed. If a guest can read a birthday card out loud, that guest can play this game and can win it. No costumes, no accents, no rehearsal, and no clever improvising demanded of the quiet one.
At four, each person holds two booklets and reads both from a printed pairing chart built so no single player ends up holding both ends of something the table is meant to work out loud. All eight suspects and all 24 clues stay in play.
The pairs nest. Drop from nine or more and you pull the highest numbered witness card; drop below eight and you move down exactly one row on the ladder. No clue is ever removed and no suspect is ever cut.
One suspect fits every piece of evidence. Each of the other seven is cleared by a clue card you can point at, so a sharp table gets there in round three and a distracted table says of course during the reveal.
Black and white is fine, every page stays readable in grayscale, and the kit prints a table of exact sheet counts for 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 players so you are not guessing. No app, no website, no phone signal.
Plain paper, black and white. The print list tells you exactly which pages you need for your headcount.
The clue cards sort by the numbers on their backs into rounds one, two and three. Seal the solution too, and you are still in the dark.
One each at eight players, two each at four, witness cards for anyone past nine. Face down is more fun.
Read the round card, everyone reads their statement, open that round's packet, then argue for ten minutes.
Everybody writes a name, then you read the reveal script, which walks the table through the evidence and clears all seven innocent suspects one clue at a time.
Most murder mystery kits make the buyer the one person who cannot enjoy the evening. They hand you the answer on page one and ask you to keep a straight face for two hours, or they expect your guests to act. Thornwood does neither. The solution is a separate sealed file with a do-not-open cover, the clue cards are numbered on the backs so they can be packeted blind, and every word any player speaks is already printed in their booklet. It also does not thin out at the edges: eight suspects and 24 clue cards are always in play whether you have four people or twenty, and the 60 minute Short Play trades a lap of arguing for a printed Alibi Board rather than deleting evidence.
As soon as your order is complete you get instant access to download your files, so you can print tonight, spend twenty five minutes cutting and sealing, and play tonight.
Print-ready PDFs in US Letter and A4. Black and white printing is fine; every page is designed to stay readable in grayscale, and card stock for the clue cards is nicer but entirely optional. You will need a PDF reader, which almost every computer and phone already has. This is a digital download; nothing is shipped.
Yes, and it is the whole design. The solution is a separate PDF that opens on a do-not-open cover page, and the clue cards sort into their three packets by the numbers printed on their backs, so you can build the entire kit without reading a word of evidence. You deal, you read the cards aloud when the timeline says to, and you guess along with everyone else.
105 to 120 minutes for the full three round game, depending on how much your table likes to argue, with a minute by minute timeline in the host guide showing real clock times. A 60 minute Short Play is built into the same file for a weeknight.
Yes. Each of the four holds two suspect booklets and reads both, announcing which character is speaking before each statement, using the pairing chart printed in the kit. All eight suspects are always in play and all 24 clues are always read, so the puzzle is never watered down.
None. Every line a player speaks is printed and read aloud. There are no costumes to buy and no scripts to learn. Guests are handed a suspect to hold, not a character to become.
It costs about four minutes. At nine or more, remove the highest numbered witness card and move its clue cards back to the suspects named on the backs. From nine to eight, remove the witnesses. Below eight, move down one row on the casting ladder, because the pairs nest. No clue is ever removed.
Yes, with a different group. Slide the clue cards back into their envelopes, reprint the accusation sheets and detective notebooks, and reseal the solution. Anyone who played the first time can host the second, because the reveal script is written to be read cold by somebody who already knows the answer.
One suspect fits every piece of evidence and the other seven are each ruled out by a specific clue card you can point at. A sharp table solves it. A distracted table gets there during the reveal and says of course.
No. It is an instant digital download of five PDF files. Nothing is shipped and no box arrives. You print it yourself or send the file to a print shop.
